Web Development

Learn the basics of creating websites, including HTML5, CSS, User Interface Design, WordPress, Github, and more.

Every Tuesday and Thursday from 6 to 8 pm

Course Description
Main learning objective for the course:
At the end of this 9-week course, students will be able to plan, design, and implement a website using current standards and best practices.
Course Type: Multidisciplinary; Discussion-based seminar; Writing-intensive; Lab
Pedagogical strategies required: Group work; Individual study; Show and tell; Verbal questioning for understanding
Course Goals

Students who complete this course successfully will be able to:
● Describe specific technologies related to web-development
● Plan a web project from start to finish
● Create wireframes
● Utilize basic design principles
● Code web pages with HTML
● Style web pages with CSS
● Incorporate on page SEO
● Determine when to use a CMS vs static sites
● Work with WordPress themes and plugins
● Configure DNS records
● Configure MySQL database
● Launch Websites
● Deploy security measures and create backups

Course Schedule: March 20th – May 17th

Week 1 - March 20 & 22: Introductions; Overview of course; History of internet and world wide web; File transfer protocol; Introduction to HTML; Introduction to developer tools; Visit Bitwise Industries
Week 2 - March 27 & 29: Writing formats; Learn to declare doctype; Build HTML5 skeleton; Block elements; Headings; Tags; ID’s & Classes
Week 3 - April 3 & 5: Intro to Design Theory; Wire frames; Intro to CSS; Inline CSS practice
Week 4 - April 10 & 12: File structures; Folder structures; Linked external files; Review HTML & CSS
Week 5 - April 17 & 19: CSS positioning; Review HTML & CSS; GitHub Version Control
Week 6 - April 24 & 26: Introduction to Content Management Systems; WordPress; Themes; Set up
Week 7 - May 1 & 3: Customizer; Plugins; Forms; Database
Week 8 - May 8 & 11: Database; Gutenberg; Finalize Sites
Week 9 - May 15 & 17: Domain name servers; File transfers; Configure files; Security; Backups; Final Project Presentation / Graduation

One-time fee of $20, due upon enrollment of first attended class.

Scholarships available to cover full cost of tuition. Available only to residents of Avenal. To apply, please submit a 2-paragraph essay explaining your interest in Web Development, what do you expect to learn from this course, and how you plan to use your new skills upon completion. *Once enrolled, students will receive access to Lynda.com accounts to aid understanding of course material; take a scheduled trip to Bitwise Industries to experience the type of careers available to web developers; and have access to check-out laptops from the Tech Center for up to 72 hours.
